Always Something There To Remind Me

Also…who doesn’t just love the music video of ‘Take On Me’ by Ah-ha?

…I wish that would happen in some of my comic books.
Last night I made meatloaf and it turned out relatively edible…
I sautéed onions, chunks of wheat bread and orange bell pepper in olive oil, then mixed them into my meat along with two diced tomatoes, some dry french bread and one egg. I tried to make in the fashion my mom does–a ring of mashed potatoes surrounding the meatloaf and baked–but my mashed potatoes were instant and I did my thingies backward (mashed potatoes in the middle)…it still wasn’t bad, though. Even passably yummy.
Last night Briggs and I watched the second episode of ‘Masters of Science Fiction’ — a 4 episode miniseries that SciFi channel is showing. It is presented by Stephen Hawking, and each episode is written by some contemporary SciFi…well…master, so we were hoping for some good shows. Unfortunately, the caliber is closer to a long episode of ‘The Outer Limits’ or ‘The Twilight Zone’…and I don’t mean the old black and white one, even…the color version that’s presented by that one dude with the droopy eyes…Forrest Whitaker. God he’s annoying.
We also watched ‘Poseidon’ …the recent remake of ‘The Poseidon Adventure’. All too often, remakes are shoddy, badly acted knock-offs with bad acting and over-done special-effects overshadowing the subtlety of the original, but in this case, I hear that the 70′s era film was pretty bad too. It wasn’t Ultraviolet bad, not even make-my-eyes-bleed bad…just…kind of silly and, well, to be honest, I have been greatly enjoying the current trend of taking science, physics and reality into account when making action movies. Unfortunately, all of the above seemed to be discounted completely in this remake (and from what I hear, in the original, too…but it was the 70s. People’s minds were short-circuited by bad clothing and disco music). If nothing else (and I might be wrong, I haven’t studied nautical Engineering…) I don’t THINK that cruise ship propellers are strong enough to create suction ala airlock-open-into-outer-space. Maybe they do…but I would be greatly surprised to find that to be the case. And seriously, for long under-water swimming expeditions, most people would be screwed–not swimming along happily having no problem holding their breath for really long periods of time. AND when you ARE swimming underwater without the aid of goggles or a diving mask, everything is very blurry…you could see vague shapes and colors, but not clearly read dials and labels in the engine room. And just because one window looses structural integrity and blasts inward, shooting sea water and glass everywhere, that does not mean that all the other windows are going to fail at the same time. Really it doesn’t.
Ok…stopping now. I need more tea.
(P.S. we did not go to bed angry. After Poseidon, we watched and episode of DS9 and felt much better)
