An unplanned cat

I had plans yesterday.

They were all derailed when I was outside and a girl walking her dog on the other side of the street mentioned that she thought she could hear a kitten crying under the neighbor’s porch.

I fished it out with no problem, and derived that this was most likely a kitten abandoned by mommy…the crusted-shut eye only added weight to that theory.

I took her down the street to the humane society but, even though they are open until 5 on Sunday, they were inexplicably closed. I took her home and cleaned up her eye, and Briggs looked for other local animal rescue type places.

We found an Animal Rescue League in Wilkinsburg and took her there…and they told me that they were totally overstocked on cats, and even though kitten season should be over they were still full of them, and they COULD take her, but due to their shortage of space and her upper respiratory issue (we think she has a cold) she would most likely be euthanized. I agreed and took her back to the door, but she was tiny and crying and I couldn’t go through with it.

So, we took her with us. We ARE taking her down to the Humane Society this morning, and hopefully they WON’T say they are going to put her to sleep…’cause we are a bit attached now. She’s an adorable little puff-ball, mostly black, with tortoise-shell markings, and the most pathetic little eyes and a mew that can almost make you cry, it’s so sad. She’s really too young to be away from her mom, but close enough that she should be okay…she’s about a month old and is eating solid food. I took some pictures:

Awww! Adorable!

Anway, Mercury was pissed off all night…I felt really bad, ’cause she OBVIOUSLY wanted love, but was so stressed out by the (little, tiny, defenseless) kitten’s presence that when you tried to pet or cuddle her, she would hiss and growl…while rubbing against your hand. Eventually, she just went and hid in one of her dark, out of the way places. *pout*

Anyway, I’m not at work yet because today I am going over to Ross Township with Briggs to drop of applications at Barnes and Nobel (fingers crossed!) and Ikea. Then I’ll go to work after that.

But I should go now ’cause of getting dressed and stuff.

Later, skaters!

***update:

Well, first of all, I’m not going to work today…I’m going job hunting instead. I am dropping off applications here and there and stuff. Woohoo. Exciting.

KITTEN UPDATE–

We took her down to the Humane Society (she really needs to get young kitten care and a vet check.) and they were SO much nicer than Animal Rescue League. When I mentioned that we had gone to the ARL, the HS woman kind of snorted a little. But the HS was TOTALLY nice and sweet to the little kitten and our counselor was cuddling her and gave us a ref. number to give them if we wanted to check up on her (at the ARL, they told us that by signing the kitten over, we gave up all rights and would not ever know what happened to her) and who knows, once she’s had a checkup and gotten all healthy we might end up adopting her regardless. And I think that she wasn’t very sick. Her eye wasn’t even crusty this morning and she was barely sneezing.

And Mercury had even come out of hiding and was letting us pet her and not hissing every time little kitten made a noise.
