totally sweet song and video: Bright Eyes – First Day of my Life

It’s getting colder but not that cold

On female footware:

“…ballet flats are key. As opposed to pointy-toed shoes, which are most often associated with hipsters and girls who work the front desk at your local Body Rayz tanning salon, rounded toes are not only more sensitive to your toe bed, but they also remind us of shoulders, which remind us of crying, which reminds us of Bright Eyes, which reminds us of being emo. ”

from Everybody Hurts; An Essential Guide to Emo Culture

It snowed a little today, white flakes skating like sorrow from a sodden sky. ;)

Briggs insists that it was hail, but I am of the opinion that hail pelts, and snow drifts, and these fluttery cold specks of white were most definitely drifting.

Not to lead anyone to believe that I am implying that Pittsburgh is now a winter wonderland of any sort…these were no more than a few scattered pieces of cold white lint landing on my black jacket, tiny scraps barely visible and falling with less frequency than the leaves of the trees lining our street, no fantasy-pillow fight fluff to fill the air with icy down. Also, I am sure that even if these loan autumn wanderers HAD enticed their compatriots to join them in an attempt to blanket building and trees, the current temperature–chilly and coat necessitating though it is–is not yet low enough for such efemarial flakes to anchor themselves to branches and bricks.

Also, happy Guy Fawkes day yesterday.

I must shamefully admit that I did NOT remember the 5 of November until the 6th, but then again, I’m not British and didn’t even know the story until Hollywood brought it to me in dark action movie form.

This week I discovered Stash Tea lemon ginger.

Delicious and spicy and citrusy. It fulfills my need for a hot drink when the point in my day when I should no longer drink caffeine has passed.

Heather sent me a link to this the other day:

http://www.skary.net/movies/littlegirl.html

it is one of a number of precious precious flash animation movies, starring invariably creepy little girls with eyes of mismatched sizes doing adorable creepy things like taking over the world with teddy bears.

This is the artist’s site:

and here are a couple of illustrations of hers:

“death on a pale horse”

“not fair”

Seriously, go check out her movies. They have short, simple plots for the most part, as one would expect for a couple minute flash movie, and they are tres cute…and yeah, tres creepy.

And now I need to stop procrastinating homework. It’s not likely to do itself. I won’t say it isn’t going to, ’cause you never know, but I’m certainly not going to count on it. But wouldn’t it be awesome if I opened my sketchpad and all my studies were already completed? Well, actually, then I wouldn’t get the benefit of doing them and thus honing my artistic skills, but…on the other hand I would get the chance to work on some of my OWN stuff…yesterday I finally got the chance to finish something of my own for the first time since I started school…nothing special, nothing deep…just a cute halloween witch:

She has some anatomical problems and the picture is very simple and pin-up (no bg, nothing but some chick posing) but it was something of my own! But I didn’t get started on my homework until 7 or so as a result.

And now I’m going to go to prevent the same thing happening today, especially since I don’t have my afternoon off tomorrow — Dan Rooney is coming to Joseph Beth to talk about his new book and they were short people so I told them I’d come work.

…so I bid you all adeu as I return to the empty darkness of my day…oh, who am I kidding? I like curling up on the couch with my sketchbook and watching Gilmore Girls

…Rory just dropped out of Yale–such drama! I just wish I could do something not assigned for a little bit. :P
