lesson learned

This week I learned:

if I have to wake up the next day, drinking Starbucks Breakfast Blend at any point later than noon is bloody stupid.

Yesterday I made myself a cup around 3pm and finished it around 5.

Last night I believe I slept for about 2 hours, then fell into a fitful state of not-sleep, hovering just on the other edge of consciousness until the alarm urged me to actually open my eyes.

Bloody hell.

Today is going to suck.

Today I WILL need me some Breakfast Blend to keep my steam up.

That’s how they get you.

Grr.

The DVD player on my computer is such a pain.

There were a bunch of movies and such that I’d been wanting to watch that were still packed in a box, and so yesterday I dug it out and began getting my movie on.

First was Peter Pan, which I hadn’t seen in ages. Getting it going caused me a couple problems, but I finally played it on Media Player Classic and had no problems.

Then I tried to watch Shrek 2, but MPC crashed each time I tried to start the DVD.

Then I started watching 10th Kingdom, which I have been jonesing for for quite a while. The first part played fine…but I have run into a problem involving the fact that the second part is on the same disk, on the ‘B’ side. The computer isn’t interested. This is particularly frustrating as I am mid-miniseries at the moment. I mean, I know what happens next, but I haven’t seen it in a while and I’m kind of into it. Grr. I’m going to try the current Windows Media Player, which is a bulkier, bitchier program, but I may be SOL.

Wish me luck.

Not much new here

Not much happening in my life. Yesterday I holed myself up and drew, worked on my Xmas card some. My hand is sore today. :( I’m out of practice. I made a Mexican rice/casserole thingy. I did no laundry or dishes. Mostly I just drew, so ya’ll get some exciting entertainment reviews today.

I finished reading Practical Magic yesterday:

All in all, this is one of those times that I feel that the movie (which deviates rather far from the original story) did a much better job than the book. The book makes it clear that magic exists, but it rarely enters the story in a form other than that of intuition or love at first sight. Most meetings and events are coincidences, and despite the format allowing us to delve deeper into the motives and personalities of the characters, and for all that, does not draw me into them and make me care in the way that the silly, sweet film adaptation does. The movie has, in my opinion, a lot more cohesion than the the book, which seems to simply be about this family which probably has some magic in it and two sisters who fight a lot but probably love each other and the problems the next generation is beginning to experience. The novel contains no family curse, no spell to call for a man who doesn’t exist, no blood bond between two very different sisters who love each other a lot, and although Jimmy Angelo DOES hang around causing minor trouble in spirit form, he doesn’t posses his ex, forcing an outpouring of togetherness in the Owens’ community. The movie always makes me cry little girlie tears when Sally and Gillian’s clasped hands and mixed blood bring them together and force the evil spirit out, and the fantastical feel of the entire story always delights me. The feelings the book gave me can best be expressed as ‘Is it over yet?’

However, after finishing Practical Magic, I decided that it was time to pick up something that had been waiting patiently for me for at least a month:

In this case, I am not disappointed in the least. After a brief tale of Spike and Dru (aww…they’re so cute!), the comic tells us about how a spoiled girl from the valley became the Slayer, almost flawlessly integrating the familiar reality of the show and the story given to us in the 1992 movie. After Buffy burns down the gym during the school dance, she and Pike hang around and fight the fight for a while (Joyce sees teenage rebellion and perhaps pyromania) and the story of what happened in the time between riding off into the twilight on Pike’s bike and getting dropped off in front of Sunnydale High begins to be revealed. The giant-foreheaded one hangs out in the shadows, keeping an eye on the world’s last best hope. Giles struggles against a colleague at the WC that is determined to become the next Slayer’s watcher through fair means or foul.

I’m enthralled.

Only 6 or so days until the Doctor Who Christmas Special! Woohoo!

Now to get me some breakfast blend in this here cup.

Ok…so I’m not actually using that cup today, but whatever. ;)
