The Worst Pies in London

I finally saw Sweeney Todd tonight.

Awesome.

That is all. Thank you and good night.

You want me to elaborate? Oh, very well….

First off, Johnny Depp and Helena Bohem Carter in the lead roles…could they have CHOSEN a more perfect pair for the movie? And of course, Tim Burton did a gorgeous job with it as only he could…

But it was fantastic…it had everything: insanity, revenge, child beating, murder, cannibalism, and Victorian insane asylums. And singing. And delicious meat pies. Oh, sorry, already mentioned those. And underage drinking.

It was like…the Count of Monte Christo, set in the slums of Victorian London, re-written by talented but insane goths, with a few large helpings of tragic dark irony sprinkled on top for flavor. The story was at once wonderful and tragic and hilarious and horrific and crossed lines so blatantly and so far that it must not have seen them at all. It didn’t, as stories often, tragically do, wimp out at the last moment, going for the maim rather than the kill. The bleakness of the setting lived up to my every Dickensian fantasy of the era

The costumes were lovely. Depp was, as always, a goth girl’s dream, and Carter was magnificent and resplendent in her corsets and unrequited love, and the skinny young man mooning after Todd’s long-lost daughter was pretty enough to play Juliette on an Elizabethan stage, fine fodder for the emo chicks watching the show. –Something for everyone!!!

If you have an ounce of macabre in you, and you SOMEHOW haven’t seen this yet, go! Now!

Oh, also, the overdone theatrical sprays of blood were priceless. And a little ‘eww’. But in a good way, you know?
