Things that are new

I’m very very tired.

On Sunday, Briggs and I went to Becky’s to watch a movie (Flight of the Living Dead.  Awesome!), and while there I drank a number of cups of coffee…since we got there around 8 pm, that puts my caffeine intake a little late.  Soooo….yeah.  I couldn’t fall asleep until past 6am on Monday morning.  ‘On the other hand’, I thought, ‘at least I’ll be tired enough to fall asleep nice and early once bed time comes again….’

Last night I fell asleep a little earlier…perhaps around 4am?  But I had to be up early for my first day back to school, so I don’t believe I actually got MORE sleep than I did the previous night, I just moved the time frame around a little (it didn’t help that the first couple of times I finally drifted off, Mercury decided to wake me up).  Thank God for coffee.

Whining aside…today was my first day attending AIP as a full time Bachelor program student!  Hurray!  This quarter I am taking Graphic Symbolism, Electronic Design (mostly just an Adobe InDesign class with a little Quark thrown in for flavor), Survey of Modern Art (art history), and Photography.  I had the first two today and the others are on Thursday.  Graphic Symbolism was not bad at all–same teacher I had for Mixed Media–and the InDesign class….well, it didn’t matter that I was rather brain dead by the time that class started, because almost everything the teacher covered was basic Adobe information (Here’s how the selection tool works.  Here’s how to type on a path.) which I have learned at least a few times by now.

Other new interesting stuff…

It’s supposed to be super cold for the next day or two…it’s dropped 2 degrees in the past hour or so and is now 8 degrees.  Snowy.

Becky loaned Briggs and me the BBC mini-series, Jekyll…a 6 episode modern re-telling of, obviously, the tale of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde.  After a fashion.

Oh GOD it’s fantastic.  James Nesbitt does an absolutely BRILLIANT job of dichotomously playing the quietly mousey Doctor Jackman and his gleefully depraved dark side.  And not only is it entertaining, creepy, and suspenseful…it’s frickin’ funny as well.  Hyde is quite the charmer, in…you know…an evil kind of way.

Sadly, we have only one episode left.  I could have easily watched the last of it tonight, but I wanted to savor the conclusion for one more day.  And I kind of want an awesome alter-ego like Doctor J’s.

Also in recent media intake, I finally read through Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle trilogy (H’s M-ing C, Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways.)  I liked the first book a lot, and still did upon re-reading…however, I felt that the second and third were rather lacking and unfulfilling…they wandered about without clear direction until, like one of her characters who accidentally turned left at the wrong doorway, you found yourself at the end with everything resolved.  More or less.  Still entertaining reads, but not what I would call epic.

We have been lucky enough to see a number of very recommendable movies lately as well, but as it is 3am and I still need to sleep at some point, not to mention the factthat I may have plugged at least a couple before, I’ll just mention in passing that I found the following movies enjoyable:

– Flight of the Living Dead (or as I call it, there’s Mother F***ing zombies on the Mother F***ing plane!  Cheesy, badly written, bad fake blood, people shooting guns on an airplane.)

–Charlie Bartlet (Smart rich boy tries to do good but mostly gets in trouble, but his heart’s in the right place.)

–Hamlet 2 (absolutely HILARIOUS.  Loved it. Four words:  “Rock me, Sexy Jesus”.)

–The Fall (1920s L.A.  A heartbroken man in the hospital bribes a young girl to aid his emo-ness by telling her a fantastical tale which comes to glowing life in her mind.  Slightly absurd, strangely paced…kind of artsy…but pretty and magical.  Also, it stars that guy from Pushing Daisies.)

Finally, I got around to processing photos from the zoo, and also took some photos of stuff that is winter around here.  A few of my favorites (click for a larger image):
