So, I recently discovered that the word ‘catholic’ actually means:
“broad or wide-ranging in tastes, interests, or the like; having sympathies with all; broad-minded; liberal.”
or
“universal in extent; involving all; of interest to all.”(from dictionary.com)
I ran across the word used in that way in a book I was reading today, and that brought it to mind.
Well, the term ‘dead-man’s hand’ (regarding poker) came up as well, and while I was double-checking what cards a dead-man’s hand was composed of, I learned a new definition.
Kicker, as in ‘That’s the kicker’ or ‘well, here’s the kicker…wait until you hear this!’ comes from poker.
When you have a set of cards like…two pair in a five card hand, Qs and 5s, and then an extra card that isn’t useful in determining the rank of the hand would be the ‘kicker’…it doesn’t acutally do anything for you, but if your hand tied with someone else’s, it would be the tie breaker… so if you had QQ55 + J and another player had QQ55 + 3, then you would win. (from wikipedia)
It’s that thing that puts you over the edge. The kicker.
Yes, I find this kind of thing fascinating.
