Going to Penn’s Colony today!
More later…
…later:
Well, Penn’s Colony was still cool…you know, if you are the type of person who considers historical reenactment events cool, which I am. The weather, though perhaps a touch more humid than it was last year, was gorgeous early fall perfection…I guess it’s rather hard to go wrong scheduling in late September, in this climate.
Briggs and I got to the site around 11:30 and met up with the Asplundhs and Grubers, then the group of us spent the next few hours wandering and admiring, watching battle reenactment and also a very bad stage performance, and nibbling apple dumplings and fried pickles.
Overall, the day was very enjoyable. There a few minor child meltdowns, but there were enough adults on hand to deal with both recalcitrance and rambunctiousness. The afore mentioned stage performance was seriously dreadful…I believe Briggs hit the nail on the head when he likened it to a talent show act put on by two 13 year old girls that don’t really know what they are doing but still want to be onstage…and have been forced to include a younger brother in the act. Yes. It was THAT bad. And, I learned that while my giant boots are great for snow and otherwise inclimate weather, for bumpy gravel paths, not so much. Oh, and Briggs and I strongly suspect that the coffee we shelled out $2 a pop for at the apple dumpling booth was actually decaf.
Though it may sound from the previous list of misfortunes that the day was fraught with troubles and tragic misadventures, most of the trip was really very nice. As mentioned, the weather was lovely (which can go a long way toward making or breaking an experience) and the garb, environment and season always make me happily nostalgic for my youth at Faire. It was fun. It was nice. I can’t claim any particular spectacular moments of amazing awesome adventure — Penn’s Colony was much the same as it was on our trip last year, so if you want more detailed information, you can read my post about PC08. Nothing truly astounding took place, but it was a very nice, very enjoyable day.
And Briggs and I finally got to try fried pickles. They tasted very much how one might expect a fried pickle to taste.
