Day of the Defective Coffee

Today was an average Saturday of errands.  I woke up and had some tea and then got ready to go, drinking another mug of tea before we left the house (I was eating crumpets — I had to have them with tea in order to feel authentic) and then Briggs and I stopped for coffee on the way in to Monroeville before running our errands.  We got all our tasks completed fairly efficiently, and as we were leaving town, we decided to stop at Starbucks to grab some caffeine for the road.  (Yes, we drink a lot of caffeinated beverages.  To be fair, Briggs hadn’t had any until we stopped for coffee on the way in. I have no excuse.)

We got our drinks and headed for home, sipping the iced deliciousness as we traveled.  But…something was wrong.  As the coffee (or chai, in my case) dissolved into our systems, it was as though an evil spell had been cast over the car.  I felt drowsy and sluggish…enough so that I gave up all attempts to resist the siren call of sleep and drooped against Briggs’ shoulder.  I was on the verge of truly nodding off when he pulled off at a gas station and convenience store and I learned that he had been suffering the same problem as I, so tired that he felt as though driving might prove unsafe without counteraction of his sleepy state.  A drink and a small snack each, and we were on our much perkier way home, but we are convinced that Starbucks may have accidentally sweetened our drinks with cough syrup rather than Torrani’s today.

Sometimes I feel the same way. Granted, I work nights, so there is not enough caffeine in the world to keep me fully awake through an entire 12 hour shift. I was about to say that there should be something stronger than caffeine available for those people who are really desperate, but then I remembered that there is always speed….

No dude…this wasn’t like ‘gee… I was really tired and I drank some coffee and I am STILL tired, darn it!’ This was more ‘gee…I was very MILDLY tired after an afternoon of errands, and got some coffee as a treat to perk me up…and OMG NOW I AM ABOUT TO FALL UNCONSCIOUS WHILE DRIVING!!!” It was like…hammer to the head coffee…we were way MORE tired after drinking it than we were before hand. It was totally weird.
