Fabulous things

Postertext.com makes posters out of full books and some creative text-wrapping:

My classmate directed me to the website Behance, which is just made up of all kinds of awesome and inspiring art stuff.  Kind of like 9Gag, but with art.   Even within just a few minutes of checking it out, I found a number of fantastic things, like:

This girl’s Renaissance-styled 2011 calender that she spent 4 years drawing and designing

<–I mean, seriously…wow.

Or, this stunning photographic series — I want to paint pictures inspired by every scene!

Illustrations for a book on mixology (the making of cocktails).  I love the combination of the old-fashioned, scratchboard style with the bright, pop-art colors and contemporary themes:

One more before I go, a set of lovely/disturbing drawings that often involve girls who are also flowers:

<– it’s settled…I must do something with little oval-shaped mirrors/picture frames/lockets/windows.

Anyway, if you want any more of what Behance has to offer, you’ll have to go let the site suck you in to it’s awesome depths yourself.

Finally, before i go, because I feel I should have at least three things, and I feel like the multiple posts from Behance counted as one and a half at most, and because it has been snowing here pretty much every day, at least a little, I will share a trio of really gorgeous winter-themed cakes that were featured in CakeWrecks’ Sunday Sweets this past weekend:

Beautiful things

It may be miserable, grey and rainy outside, but the internet brings me beautiful things to lift my spirits and engage my covet-drive:

Behold:  Art of the Disney Princesses book.

A book full of princesses as imagined by various artists in their own styles.

An insightful interview with Scott Westerfield about reading and steampunk and why some people are just pretentious tools

Oh!  Here we go!  A steampunk haunted house and a video about it!

The world’s first cyborg!

Info about a movie that is extra creepy because it is sort of true, though not in a literal fashion!

A video that chronicles a guy’s life through his Facebook page!

Three pieces of kick a$$ art!

annnndddd….I think that’s all I’ve got for you right now.

Cold and wet

I have been very bad about updating lately, for which I apologize.  I keep meaning to post, but keep wanting to wait until something happens in my life other than being busy, stressed out and cranky, as I hate having a blog overflowing with negativity…so my blog continues to sit empty.

So…today I am busy, stressed-out, cranky, and also decided to make my annual attempt to wear high heels like a real girl, so my feet hurt.  Stupid shoes.  Also, it’s rainy and the damp is making my hair poof, and I spilled my coffee and missed my bus, and I have a to-do list a mile long.

However, I got frustrated enough by the combination of these factors and the business-y skirt that kept riding up every time I sat down, that when I got to town I threw caution to the wind and decided to blatantly scour the clearance racks at Macy’s for something better.  So, my feet still hurt, but my legs have leggings and the rest of me has a cute & comfy stripey shirt/dress thingy that could be warmer, but other than that I love, and so I may be hungry and being held captive by my shoes, but at least I am not wearing a skirt that attempts to flash the room every time I shift.

I really need to get back in the habit of choosing my outfit the night before on days I have to be up early.

Of course, arguing with my wardrobe isn’t the only thing I’ve been doing.  I have been going to school and mostly not flunking out.  Well…really not flunking out at all — which I feel is at least a little impressive, considering my near-meltdown in week 3.  I am dealing with some heightened anxiety issues that are making my life sporadically miserable and surreal, and am still searching for an adequate way to curtail their effects, but, still not flunking out. Mostly doing okay.  My illustration teacher really liked my book cover, and my Communications Design teacher didn’t seem to hate my stupid folder, so yay!

I am also doing okay at my internship, I think.  We finished the newsletter — about two weeks later than I originally thought it would be going out and about three weeks later than it was actually due…but the good news is that I totally held up my end, and the lateness was due to people not having stuff ready rather than me procrastinating. My boss/es seem/s really happy with the work I did.  Now I’m designing them a Christmas card, which is kind of fun.

I finally got around to taking some initiative and emailing my resume and sample sheet out to some actual GD studios/marketing firms in the area and have so far heard back from two, which is two more than I was strictly counting on.  One told me that they had an internship program which was an unpaid 12-week course of 40 hour weeks, which, as a full-time, graduating student, didn’t really work for me…the second, however, offered me an interview for next week, so…fingers crossed!  I look forward to seeing what an actual industry company thinks of my work.  And hope that they, too, do not require the position to full time.

Other than internship and school, still not a lot happening.  I’m in the home stretch and pretty busy + still technically unemployed, so pretty broke.   Due to our full full schedule, I haven’t even been getting much time to cook, except on the weekends, and this past weekend saw me couch-ridden with the flu (I think…it was mild but draining) so this week I pretty much didn’t.  Ugh…I shouldn’t write about food…I’m totally hungry.  Stupid shoes.

A couple of other things recently…

Briggs and I spent an afternoon at the Strip market and got all kinds of random and interesting things, including a hat with rabbit ears for me and a bunch of random spices and two bags of delicious popcorn that were gone before we knew it and some biscotti that was disappointingly stale, and a pound of fresh ahi with which I made super awesome donburi that contained a half a pound of raw tuna for each of us.  Wow.  I made cabbage rolls.  I cleaned the house.  I finally got the random prints purchased at comic cons hung, but am utttely unhappy with the current configuration, and resolve to change it as soon as i find some framing nails and some time.  I continue to doodle in my sketchbook and enjoy it utterly, and will scan and post pictures one of these days. Briggs and I went to see Hereafter, which was slow and long and pointless, and Megamind, which was awesome.  This past weekend I finally watched Toy Story 3, which made me cry like the internet said it would, and Deliverance, which was strange but good.  I’m currently reading three books simultaneously, which I never do, but I am making work, and experimenting with not smoking, which I am not sure is good for my mental health.  Also, I stumbled upon the trailer for SuckerPunch this past week, and have determined that it will be my birthday/graduation celebration movie, because it looks frickin’ awesome, and also comes out in March.

Now I really want some ahi.  Stupid shoes.
